Causes and Predictors:
The less severe and the less frequent the violence the more likely the woman will stay in the relationship.
If the battered woman was exposed to violence or was physically abused as a child the more likely she is to be an abusive relationship as well as stay in the relationship
Not having enough resources to leave the abuser.
Women at risk for battered women’s syndrome are repeatedly abused physically, sexually or emotionally.
Three stages of Battered women’s syndrome:
1: “Tension building phase”: This includes yelling minor physical abuse and the battered women trying to calm her partner to avoid more severe abuse.
2. “Acute battering Incident”: In this stage the incident fro phase one has built up and let to a more serious physical beating.
3: “Loving Contrition”: This stage is the remorse and apologies of the batterer, to reassure the victim it will not happen again.
This becomes a repeated cycle and the victims then believes that the batterer will stop. Until the next battering incident occurs, she is assured that it will not happen again and receives positive reinforcement to stay in the relationship.
Many battered women also remain in the relationship because threats made to kill them or their children by the abuser.
